About the artist
The voice is the through line.
From Kingston church choirs to Toronto stages and beyond, Jay J. Ra has spent a life making room for every part of the sound.
A life in music
Rooted in more than one place.
Born Dadrien Brown in Kingston, Jamaica, Jay J. Ra started singing in church at eight and committed to music by fourteen. Early lessons in community, gospel, and Jamaican musical culture became the foundation for a voice that could travel.
After relocating to Toronto, he studied music at York University and moved between gospel choir, classical repertoire, opera training, and staged performance. That range still lives in the recordings: rhythm and lift, discipline and feeling, a big voice that knows when to get close.
In 2024, connecting more deeply with his ancestral roots in Kwahu, Ghana, opened a new chapter. The name Jay J. Ra carries that sense of renewal — a way of making music that holds Caribbean inheritance, African connection, and the present moment together.
“Genre is not a boundary. It is a set of doors.”
